ABOUT me + this project

ABOUT this project

let’s create. together.

Julian of Norwich (1343-c.1416) and Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) were two religious visionary women with truly impressive creative lives, producing musical compositions, plays, books, scientific treatises, and visual art. In fact, a great number of nuns and religious women in medieval Europe were producing a whole lot of art — but why? What did that art mean to them? What can art like theirs mean to us? These activities, carefully designed around actual artistic works created by women religious in the Middle Ages, will endeavor to help us learn about ourselves and these women through making art — together.

is this for me?

the short answer is yes.

Are you a medievalist? A newcomer to the medieval world?

A lover of arts and crafts? A little wary of creating art?

Someone who wants to get in touch with their spirituality? Someone who doesn’t define themselves as spiritual at all?

Neat. Then this is for you. And it’s for anyone else. It’s for everyone.

Maybe you’ll learn something new about the past. Maybe you’ll learn something new about yourself. Maybe you’ll just take some time to relax. Maybe you’ll look at someone else’s art. Maybe you’ll make some art of your own. If that sounds good to you, then this is for you.
